The Oyster3 has different configurable tracking modes to best fit a variety of applications.
The below recordings show how to quickly and easily configure the Oyster3's update rate.
When adjusting the update rate, we must consider:
The Application
Update Frequency
If a customer asks if they can receive an update on their Oyster 3 that checks in more often than every 5 minutes the answer is: “ 5 min check-in time “ is the fastest update interval that we have available”
Technically, we do have the capability to do 3 min updates but this is extremely draining on the batteries and results in more issues for the customer
Jostle Mode
We can offer jostle mode if the customer wants a more sensitive setting
We can put the device in “jostle mode”
This allows for the customer to be alerted anytime the device senses any movement
This is great, but the customer needs to be informed that movement can be
The wind blowing
Their kids on the equipment, car, etc
Weather
Animals
Recovery Mode
Additionally, if an asset is stolen, the unit can be put into Recovery Mode, where the unit will live-track with an increased update rate for a configured time period, to aid in asset recovery.
If the customer is concerned about after hours or the weekend we can enable “recovery mode” or enable self service on the account where the customer is able to take the device in and out of this mode through the mobile or web app. We will need to walk them through this process
Asking for “Real Time Tracking”
If someone says they want it to track in real time, explain to them that the updates are set to every 5 min at a maximum because it is a battery operated device it is designed to do this to prolong the battery life.
Battery operated devices are not going to track in “real time” like an iPhone, but with location points updated every 5 min ( unless put into recovery mode which is a different use case and cannot be left on for updating purposes due to data consumption & prolonging battery life )
