Vehicle
The correct installation is under the vehicle. There may be multiple locations that can work, but the main things to pay attention to are that it is pointing straight down as pictured and within 18 inches on an edge so the signal can get out and connect to the satellites.
Trailer
Underneath the trailer, less than a foot away from the back edge. The top of the device should face the ground. This allows the ground to behave like a mirror for the GPS signal to reach the device.
